I live in the Ceramics District of Old Cairo which has hundreds of years of history in ceramic production. I buy all of my ceramic supplies here at a locally owned shop named after its owner Arafa.
I like to use local materials in my work it gives my work a geographic personality and a local character. The clay most commonly used in Egypt is Aswan clay coming from Upper Egypt. Because the Nile flows South to North the Southern part of Egypt is referred to as Upper Egypt.
The craftsmen here use a traditional kick wheel. Their skill is impressive and Im always amazed watching them work.
